Gates of Jerusalem

The present Gates of Jerusalem are Herods Gate, Damascus Gate, New Gate, Jaffa Gate, Dung Gate, East Gate. The gates mentioned in Nehemiah chapter 3 are different from these gates and here are the names of these gates. Sheep Gate, Fish Gate, Old Gate, Valley Gate, Dung Gate, Water Gate, Horse Gate, East gate, Miphkad Gate.

The gates in Nehemiah have a spiritual lesson in them and I will try to explain that in the near future and gradually.

1- Sheep Gate: Neh. 3:1 (Salvation) "... Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29. Note: The only gate that is sanctified. Hananeel means Grace. Sheep Gate

2- Fish Gate: Neh. 3:3 (Obedience) "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Fish Gate

3- Old Gate: Neh. 3:6 (Temptation) "... that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: ..." Rev. 12:9 See also I Cor. 10:13 Note: This gate opens to the valley of Gehenna.

4- Valley Gate: Neh. 3:13 (God's protection and care) "Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Psalm 23:4

5- Dung Gate: Neh. 3:14 (Confession) The word dung in Hebrew means to heal. Through this gate all the trash of the city was taken out to the Gehenna valley to be burned. To heal the city is to keep it clean and to keep it clean is to take away the trash out of the city and burn it. The same way in confessing our sins we are forgiven. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleans us from all unrightousness." I John 1:9

6- Fountain Gate: Neh. 3:14 (Believe as the scripture have said and you will have the Holy Spirit) "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

7- Water Gate: Neh. 3:26 (Word of God) "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word." Eph. 5:26

8- Horse Gate: Neh. 3:28 (Judgement) See Rev. 6:1-8 the horse as the symbol of judgement.

9- East Gate: Neh. 3:29 (The Lord's Return) See Ezekiel 43: 1-6 and Ezekiel 44: 1-3

10- Miphkad Gate: Neh. 3:31 (New Heaven and New Earth) The word Miphkad in Hebrew means a numbering, census, and the appointed place. "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:2
